You need:

  • 📄 one piece of paper, folded in 4

  • 🖍 🖌 🖋 at least one pen. I recommend multiple pens of different colours.

The exercise will help you draw and reflect on your own boundaries in relationship with others.

This exercise works also for a facilitate team exercise, with the reassurance that people will not be asked to share their drawings.

Take a piece of paper and fold it in 4. The folded paper should have 4 sides you can draw on. Number each side of the paper from 1 to 4.

1Set-up On each side, draw yourself in the middle of each side. Can be a stick figure, s smiley face or anything that you feel will represent you.

  1. Fold the paper so you can see only square number one. Draw the boundaries between you and your coworkers.

  2. Fold the paper so you can see only the square number two. Draw the boundaries between you and those you care for, such as friends or family.

  3. On square number 3, draw the boundaries between you and your clients (or another group like students, neighbours, fellow parents, or leadership team)

  4. On square number 4, draw the boundary between your life-work balance.

  5. Reflections: Open the paper so you can see all 4 sides. What do you see? What stands out for you? What are some of the differences that you observe? How do the drawings make you feel? What are some of the things you want to remember from this exercise?
